Previously seen as a strange request or simply something that didn’t work, online job interviews are now part of the modus operandi of the HR sectors of companies. This saves time and money, not only for the company but also for the candidate. Even so, it is necessary to prepare for them, keeping in mind their peculiarities: the important thing is to check the connection, prepare the environment to avoid noise and interruptions, in addition to paying attention to body and non-verbal language.
Online interviews have been increasingly common in selection processes, whether for jobs, internships, trainee programs, various selections.
Before showing your technical skills, it is necessary to present yourself as a human being, with your vulnerabilities, but also with the ability to connect with those on the other side. And the way I found to do that was by communicating assertively.
Even today, as an entrepreneur, I try to use some techniques for online meetings and interviews. I share some of them here:
▶ Maintain eye contact: Look directly into the camera during the interview to maintain eye contact with the interviewer. This demonstrates that you are paying attention and engaged in the conversation.
▶ Speak clearly and confidently: This demonstrates that you are confident and well-prepared for the position.
▶ Listen carefully: Listen to the interviewer and avoid interrupting while he/she is talking. This demonstrates that you are a good listener and are interested in what he/she has to say .
▶ Ask Relevant Questions: Ask about the position, company, and workplace culture. It demonstrates that you’re really interested in the job and that you’ve done your homework.
▶ Use concrete examples: Talk about your past experiences to demonstrate your skills and competencies. This helps the interviewer get a better understanding of how you might be a good candidate for the position.
▶ Be honest: Don’t exaggerate your skills or experience, as this can hurt your chances of getting the job.
Despite the differences between face-to-face and online interviews, the end goal is the same: to demonstrate that you are the right person for the job. Also remember to check the technical devices of technology, such as internet connection, audio and video, in addition to looking for a quiet place to avoid intercurrences and disrupt communication during the interview.
